August 15th

Monday, August 15

A soggy start to the day, Tim Wells left his boots out and they are half full of water when he gets up. We pack gear away wet, it seems as if everything we own is wet and our packs weigh a ton. As we police up the area we find that Brent's cup floated down the hill about 30-40 feet during the night, and that Sam's spoon is missing. We leave camp and head for Ute Gulch. As we leave Halen, Rob Aronin reads the sign to Ute Gulch as to the right and we take it. We hike for a while and things don't look right. We question the map and trials and do a little investigation. We find out we had made a wrong turn, after we finish our breakfast (which happens to be a lunch) we head back up the trail we came down. We get back to the sign and find out that someone had tampered with the sign and it pointed in the wrong direction. We fix the sign and continue on. We hike the ridge and get a good view of our next two days of hiking, not to easy. We stop at the trail crossing to Ute Gulch and Aspen springs, we leave our packs and Nathan volunteers to watch them for an apple but from the trading post, it gives him a chance to rest his knee as he is now the fourth member of the Bad Knee Club. We stock up on junk food and get our last couple of days of dehydrated food. Nathan will have to settle for a bag of chips and a Jolly Rancher stick because they are out of apples. Several crew members dig into the swap box looking for extra food. We return to Nathan and learn that he saw an elk while we are gone. We complete our hike to Aspen Springs and arrive just in time for it to start raining. We get set up and hide under some VERY large rocks to stay dry. After it stops raining we explore the rocks around us as the Hacky Sack was left at Harlen by mistake because it was so dirty it looked like a rock. Mr. F and Rob Law play hide and go seek with Sam, Scott and Brent. The Law Boys bless the new pilot/co-pilot latrines that were just put in at this site. Our sister crew set their tents up on the rocks above us, they should make good lighting rods if we need them. Mr. F sees a crew go by where the advisors are not wearing packs, it seems as if the rest of the crew is carrying their personal gear, Mr F. thinks this is a good idea but we quickly convince him it is not.. Tim, Scott, Brent, and Sam climb more rocks and met a crew of scouts looking for some chewing tobacco, yum! A group of advisors from Virginia come over and talk to us about what is going on and we share stories. We do evaluation and the rest of the evening is free. Mr F & K, Brent, Sam, Nathan and Tim climb up on the rocks and share stories about themselves. Watch the moon raise and the stars come out. It was a beautiful evening.
