Tuesday August 9
A 7:45 depart from camp, we say good-bye to Jeff after he gives us our Wilderness Pledge Cards. We hike awhile before breakfast. As we are hiking, a scout juices in his shorts. He laughs about it and all in all it was pretty funny. A feat that Mr. F & K are amazed by is the fact that this scout changes his underwear with out taking off his shorts, a pretty interesting feat. After all this excitement and entertainment we decide to stop for breakfast. After eating Tim Wells continues to lead the crew on the hike towards French Henry (or to some French Horn). The hike is a challenge but we move on. After doing a side trip through the rock garden we rested a few more times with the last one being only 50 feet from the end but we did not know until we got up to start again. We arrived at camp and we panned for gold with McGyever. No one came out rich but they had fun. We ate a cooked meal and then we hiked up to the mine tour. Mike and Courtney took us on a tour of the mine and showed us how it was to be a miner. Brent got scared when they were talking about the rats in the mine and he thought one was running up his leg (thanks to Mr. F) The whole crew got scared when the unexpected explosion went off. The next thing that we learned was that the miners (the guys with no thumbs) sometime had to walk out of the mine without lights which was called mucking. The staff encouraged us to try to get out of the mine without our flashlights. Mr. Kirkland headed the group and we knock our way out with the exception of the attack of the Tommy-Knockers. It was a cool tour and we were all excited once it ended. After the mine we hiked the rest of the way up to Cooper Park via the trail affectionately called "The Walt. During supper we had to chase off mini-bear that were attacking us and stealing our food. A mini bear snuck up behind Mr. Kirkland and Mr. Kirkland blows him away with a hidden weapon (fart gas). Gas becomes a problem with the entire crew. We start the ten foot rule during eating times so that everyone can eat without smelling yesterday’s meal again. We head to bed about 9:00 with quite a few F-111's flying over.
