What were they thinking??
One year while at Philmont, I had a scout come up to me about the third or fourth day on the trail telling me he didn’t feel good. I went through the whole list of things like what have you eaten, how much water you drink etc. All things seemed normal, in order to better investigate this, I asked him when was the last time you had a bowel movement. He looked at me strangely and said when we were back at base camp. I thought I heard him wrong and asked again, he said back at base camp. Understand I said we were on day 3 or 4 on the trail meaning he had not taken a poop in four days. I suggested to him that might solve his problem. He was hesitant because at Philmont, the bathroom facilities are poor to non-existent and he didn’t like the idea of using them. I questioned him, if he planned on not pooping the whole trip. He said YES sheepishly, I don’t think he was thinking about 11 days in the backcountry without pooping but that was his answer. I said, tell you what, I suggest you go take a dump and let me know if that helps, there is NO WAY you will make it the entire trip with a good dump. By this time, the others were telling him the same thing. That afternoon, I saw him again and asked how he was feeling, he said, I feel much better, then proudly told me you were right, taking a dump did help a lot, I feel much better now. All I can say is, what were they thinking?
