Over my years as Scoutmaster, I took many people to the hospital for minor injuries. The oddest one was the one pictured above. The scout on the left caught one of those handlebar extensions on a tree when mountain biking and went over the front of the bike (with a helmet on) and broke his arm when it kind of got caught in the other handlebar extension. I walked him back to the truck to take him to the hospital, while I was getting him loaded up, one of the members of the Troop came back and said, wait, we have another person for you to take with. I said WHAT, the person on the right, decided to check his chain tension while he was biking and got it stuck in between the chain and the sprocket, smashing his finger and putting a hole through his fingernail. Over the years, we went for stitches, broken bones, flu’s, and a few other things. Even adults went to the hospital, nothing ever very serious. I can credit that to the safety rules of Scouting, which prevent bad injuries. Boys will be boys and things will happen, even the big boys. I would like to thank ALL THE ADULTS and scouts who followed and enforced those rules. From the basic totin chip rules to the bigger things like wearing a helmet on biking trips, I know that saved a few scouts from some major injuries, one or two scouts even cracked their helmets open on a bike trip but they sustained no head injuries. There are safety rules for a reason. One of my biggest fears as a Scoutmaster was someone getting seriously hurt. Especially driving to a fro an outing. Thank you all for being safe! Continue to be safe!
