Jelly Belly

One of the things I used to do when I went to Philmont is take a bag or two of Jelly Belly jelly beans.  When at a place like Philmont, you eat mostly dehydrated food and some of it is horrible.  Some is OK, but it is not like home-style food.  So on Day 5 or  6 I would pull out these jelly bellies and we would talk about the trip, some of us were homesick a bit, missing flush toilets, our family but food had to be up there too. The taste of these morsels of sugar was just awesome. You would eat them close your eyes think about the flavor you had in your mouth and fantasize about the flavor. Most of the time, the scouts on the Trip were first-timers so they were surprised to shed as much weight in our packs, I added a pound or two in Jelly Beans.  I was even known to write inspirational notes to crews I didn’t participate with and give them a bag or two to savor on their trip to think about me and home as well. I always hope that they made the trip a little better for all.  Those were some great memories and I will never forget the many adventures of Philmont. If you ever get a chance to go to Philmont, DO IT!
