Teamwork

Teamwork

Teamwork, you could go to many different groups of people, or clubs and teams, and they might all give you a different answer. They might say that it is when kids work together to reach certain goals, or they might say that it's when a team works to win a game. What would a scout tell you, if you asked him, I would say that it's when you have a group of people, kids or adults that work together and help each other working towards group or individual goals?

Teamwork is one of the most important factors of scouting, you start to learn from the very beginning that you may have certain goals but just because those goals are only for you, does not mean that other scouts can't help you. Almost every single thing we do at Scouting has something to do with teamwork. The very first campout I went to was the Spring Campout at Oh-Dakota, and it was rainy and damp, and cold. It was one of the best experiences, because I was able to see what true teamwork was all about, when the patrols had to cook all their meals and everyone in every patrol was able to take part in something, whether it was mixing the pancake mix for making breakfast, or going and getting the cooking supplies to make dinner. Not only did everyone have a part but they would switch, I was a first year at the time and I got to cook and make tacos for my patrol because the older scouts had teamwork and helped me make the meal.

I was surprised to see how much teamwork was used, and now five years later, 13 scouts are preparing to go to New Mexico for a 12 day hike and we have to carry our equipment and know where to go, but how are we all going to achieve the goals of being able to complete the trek but also how we complete the trek, there's only one possible way to be able to achieve those goals and that's through teamwork. We have three meals a day, and we all can't cook our own meals so we are going to have to be able to work together to cook and to carry the equipment between 70 to 80 miles, if someone is unable to be able to carry some equipment we are all there for the person, or if one gets injured were all there.

Is teamwork just about helping ourselves and others achieve goals, by working together? How about bonding with each other and getting to know one another better, to become better friends, so it's even easier to complete those goals and succeed in what everyone accomplished. Scouting has taught me so much about how teamwork is really supposed to be shown and I can't wait to use what I've learned with all the other scouts as one, tackle on the trek for Philmont Scout Ranch.
