Up up and away

This week’s meeting will deal with flight and aviation with a guest speaker, be sure and come and soar into new adventures! Bring your best paper airplane plan to test out what you learned too.

Camp Deposit is due

Don’t forget that the Fact Sheet says camp deposit is coming up next week, don’t forget to get that turned in by the 15th, but this week is not to early either. We were at the pre-camp meeting earlier this week, and they have a bunch of exciting and fun things at Camp Freeland Leslie, and for those 14 and over, you might have the option to go utilize the NEW ATV program too. Everyone should be thinking about Merit Badges they want to take at camp. The Merit Badge sign up will be sometime in February so, so we can get into the sessions you want to get into. You can see what they have to offer HERE in the Troop Documents section, take a look. Remember, Camp Freeland Leslie is a camp that has organized sessions for merit badges, so you will have to make sure that what you want fits the schedule. Also, don’t forget everyone needs a camp physical which is available HERE.

Upcoming meeting

Our next Road Trip Monday will be February 29th, it is going to take us all the way to NASA, yep, NASA the space people. The only thing is we won’t be going there but we are going to have a teleconference with a payload specialist from NASA and you will get a chance to ask all the questions you want about the space program. if you have questions you want to ask, be sure to get them to Chris Hanna who is organizing this meeting, and he will get him the questions to our host ahead of time so he can give answer them to the fullest.

Troop Elections

Troop elections are coming up, if you are interested in running for a leadership position please fill out a form by this Monday. We are evaluating the current patrol structure right now and are considering rearranging some of the patrols, but if you are interested in being a leader, still apply for the job and we will consider that when looking at the patrols. We will have the patrols rearranged before the election.

That should do it this week for all, for those who are 13 or will have completed 7th grad by this summer, please read the High Adventure items below.

See you Monday!

Thanks

Mr. F.

High Adventure

We had our high adventure meeting last week, but only four scouts showed up, so we discussed the ideas, but did not take any vote. We have opted to do the vote at the February 15th troop meeting. Based on some comments made from last year’s selection process, we are going to do the selections differently, but the final details have not been finalized, we want to make sure we select an event that would get the most participation for all. We will have those details available before the election process. The four events up for discussion are the following, in random order.

We would camp on all these events, most food would be prepared by the group, with an occasional restaurant visit.

Canoe Trip on the Flambeau River- This would be a 4-6 day canoe trip down the Flambeau river, and flowage. We would depart Racine to the Flambeau area, work with an outfitter and canoe down the river, we would have all gear and food in the canoe with us, and stop each day at wilderness style camp sites. (Cost $250-$300)

Kayaking This would be a 4-6 day canoe trip down the Wisconsin River. We would depart Racine to the Wisconsin River area, work with an outfitter and Kayak down the river, would stop each day at wilderness style camp site, some of them on sandbars in the river. (Cost $250-$300)

Because of the distance and travel, both of these events would be 7-10 days. It is important to understand, these are different than maybe school trips, these two events will be decided by those attending, so you will have a lot of latitude about what you CAN do on the trip. Both locations offer A LOT of options, and we will tailor the trip to the group.

Washington DC Tour- We would leave Racine and travel to Washington DC via troop vehicles. We are limited to a max of 500 Miles a day, which means we would stop at locations about half way which would be in Ohio, possible stops could be Football hall of fame, Cedar Point Amusement park or other destinations in the area, we would spend 4 days or so in historical Washington visiting destinations of the choice of those attending. Might include Newseum, Smithsonian, International Spy Museum, National monuments, War memorials, Holocaust museum or other attractions in the area, we would return home and stop at some location about half way on the way back. All-inclusive cost would be $500-$550.

Western Tour- We would leave Racine and travel west via troop vehicles. We are limited to a max of 500 Miles a day, so we would get as far as South Dakota, we could include a trip to Mt Rushmore, then travel to Yellowstone (and maybe Tetons) and spend 3 days in that areas, it could include visiting hot springs, Old Faithful, and touring the many attractions in the Yellowstone/Teton Area.

We may also include some hikes if the crew decides on this. Other attractions might include the Devils tower and the Badlands, we would travel towards home, with one more stop on the way home. (Cost $340-$380)

Google these locations to find out about what is available, we welcome your ideas. All the costs of these events is an educated guess at best, with gas and food prices always on the move, we will have to determine the cost as details of each trip are hammered out. Many of the costs may vary as more or less people attend.

PHILMONT 2017, for those interested in Philmont 2017, a PHILMONT FACT SHEET is listed here, be sure to get your deposit in by Feb 15th.

Thanks

Mr. F.
