Program: Do you feel that there is never enough time on the first day of camp? Does the swim test take up too much of our valuable time that could be better spent pitching tents and dining flies? Do you need more time to get that mosquito net just right? If so, please join us for a night of swimming at the Sealed Air YMCA located in Mt. Pleasant. We will be conducting a BSA swim test along with an open swim. This swim test will be valid for our week at camp, giving us the swim test time to get settled in at camp.

Not sure what more I can say to stress the importance of getting this done!

New Transportation Procedure

It was discussed at the last committee meeting it’s time to change a long-standing procedure of dropping off scouts at home at the conclusion of events. We ask that ALL parents take the Youth Protection training provided by the BSA so you are aware of the procedures expected of all youth and adults while participating in Scouting events. It’s been a long standing policy of Youth Protection standards that no one on one activity with Scouts and adults and it was decided that our current procedure puts several drivers in that very situation, and we need to change to the following

The Scouts will need be picked up where they were dropped off (usually St. Rita) at the conclusion of all events in a timely manner. We are going to discontinue the drop offs at home. This will include both outings and campouts. We will do our best to provide a time for parents to pick up scouts, for simple outings that should not be a real issue. When it comes to campouts where departure/arrival time varies depending on the motivation of the scouts to get packed up and headed home and getting tents dry before we break from camp it is more difficult to have an exact time. In those cases we will have the Scout text or call parents on the way home (they will use leaders/drivers cell phone, scouts should not bring cell phones to campouts). We ask that parents be prompt in picking up scouts as we will need to continue to maintain two deep leadership till the last scout has departed. We ask that parents stick around to make sure we do not leave any adult one on one with a scout. If Parents cannot pick up their child and want to designate someone else to pick up, please make those arrangements before departure and notify scouting adult in charge prior to departure for the event. In keeping with Scouting policy, we strongly discourage any adult from taking anyone home but their own sons. If parents want to carpool to St. Rita, to pick up their scout, that is fine. Sorry, we know that drop offs at home has been helpful for parents, but in light of each Scout’s safety, the Scouting program has set guidelines for all adults to follow, and we NEVER want to put any scout or adult at risk of being judged for potential unethical behavior.

With this in mind, it may be a good time to remind all parents, scouts and leaders of the long-standing policy that there is never a case where there should be one on one contact without others around. This includes working on a merit badge, doing service hours or working on advancement in general. While there may be time to counsel a scout either while working towards advancement, Eagle projects Board of Reviews, Scoutmaster Conferences, or for a discipline issue, that should be done in plain sight of others. Please don’t drop off your son at the Scout meeting and leave unless you are sure there is a second adult present. Seeing we live in a more virtual world, emails, text messages and other forms of electronic communications between youth and adults should be done by including a second adult in those communications (parents are fine second adults). That includes requesting a Merit Badge Card from Mrs. Andersen, asking questions about Troop meeting plan as a PLC member to asking a question anything from events to advancement related. For full list of guidelines, we STRONGLY encourage adults to take the Youth Protection Training provided by the BSA. Safety is our top priority. Let’s continue to keep all safe. Both youth and adults. Thanks in advance for your understanding.

That’s it for this week, see you at the pool!
